Say goodbye to: cellulite, dimples, cover ups

The first and only FDA-approved injectable for cellulite in the buttocks of women

How does QWO work to treat cellulite? QWO (collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes) is made from enzymes called collagenases. These enzymes are thought to target the structural causes under the skin, where cellulite starts. QWO works by releasing fibrous bands, redistributing fat cells, and stimulating the growth of new collagen. Most patients require three treatments over the course of two months. Injections take 10 minutes or less, and in clinical trials, no post-treatment downtime was required (individual results may vary).

Why we recommend it

Prior to QWO, there were no FDA approved treatment options for cellulite in the buttocks. Once a patient completes the QWO treatment, the results are permanent – no maintenance is needed.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is very common in adult women, in fact about 9 out of 10 women will have cellulite in their lifetime. It is important to understand that cellulite isn’t fat, nor is it caused by what or how much you eat and it is not caused by a lack of exercise.

There are 3 things that together cause those dimples:

  1. Skin: Over time, skin thins.
  2. Fat: Fat cells enlarge and push against the skin.
  3. Fibrous bands: The fibrous bands under the skin thicken and cause tension and the signature dimpling on your butt.

Pre-Treatment / Post Treatment Care

Do not receive QWO if you are:

  • Allergic to collagenase or to any of the ingredients in QWO
  • Have an active infection in the treatment area

Before receiving QWO, tell your healthcare provider:

  • If you have a bleeding problem
  • If you are pregnant or may become pregnant, nursing or plan to nurse
  • All medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements, especially if you take a medication that prevent the clotting of blood (antiplatelet or anticoagulant).

Prior to treatment please avoid:

  • Avoid any medications or supplements that increase bruising, including: ibuprofen, aspirin, coumadin (ask PCP prior to stopping), fish oil, or vitamin E.
  • The ideal time to schedule this procedure is at least 4 weeks prior to a big event.
  • Inform your provider if you have a history of anaphylaxis, and if you are pregnant or nursing

What to expect day of treatment:

  • Before treatment, one of our aesthetic nurse practitioners will discuss treatment and expectations with you. After identifying the treatment areas, she will then use a small needle to inject QWO directly into targeted dimples in the buttocks using a small needle.

Post Treatment:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours after treatment.
  • Avoid medications and supplements that may increase bruising for 48 hours following treatment.
  • Consider compression garments (Spanx, Biker shorts) for 2-4 days following treatment to improve comfort.
  • Avoid sun exposure during treatment and for 2 months following last treatment to avoid post-inflammatory discoloration.
What are the side effects?

The most common side effects of QWO include: pain, areas of hardness, itching, redness, bruising, discoloration, swelling and warmth in the treatment area. In clinical studies, side effects generally lasted less than three weeks.

When will I see results?

Visible results may be achieved in 10 weeks. In clinical studies, women received 3 treatments of QWO, 21 days apart.

How many treatments will I need?

If one of our aesthetic nurse practitioners determines that QWO is right for you, she will recommend a treatment plan, including the total number of treatments. Each treatment visit may include up to 2 treatment areas. QWO injections will be given 21 days apart for 2-3 treatment visits

I highly, highly recommend this practice – especially for people who are neurodivergent and/or who have anxieties around receiving medical care. All staff members were pleasant to interact with; I let the medical assistant know that I’m typically a hard stick, but bless her, she got it in one try. I wish I could give them more than five stars!
