Incontinence is fairly common among women, yet we don’t talk about it.

What exactly is incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. Just a few drops of urine, or complete emptying of the bladder, can occur with incontinence.

Am I really not the only one?

Incontinence is common among women. It is particularly common in women over the age of 50, but can impact you at any age.

How do I know if I am experiencing incontinence?

The most common symptoms of incontinence include:

  • A strong urge to urinate
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Waking up at night to urinate
  • Pain with urination
  • Leaking urine while sleeping

Are there really treatment options?

Treatment options include medical, in-office procedures, and surgery.

Medical treatment options include:

  • Medications that decrease spasms of the bladder
  • Lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, decreased fluid intake before bed, and bladder training
  • Physical therapy (focus on kegel exercises and pelvic floor strengthening)

Procedural and surgical treatment options include:

  • Treatment with the Morpheus 8, Vtone, or Intima technologies (these are minimally invasive procedures that utilize radiofrequency, microneedling and/or laser technology for treatment).
  • Sling
  • Repair surgery to tighten the wall(s) of the vagina

What to expect on your visit

During your visit, you can expect your care team to listen to and address all of your concerns in a safe and trusted space. A consultation for incontinence may include:

  • A history and physical examination
  • Laboratory tests
What are the types of incontinence?

There are 3 major types of incontinence: stress incontinence (leaking urine with coughing, laughing, sneezing, or with exertion), urge incontinence (unable to hold urine), and mixed incontinence (combination of urge and stress).
