What exactly is incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. Just a few drops of urine, or complete emptying of the bladder, can occur with incontinence.

Incontinence is common among women. It is particularly common in women over the age of 50.
How do I know if I am experiencing incontinence?
The most common symptoms of incontinence include:
- A strong urge to urinate
- Frequent need to urinate
- Waking up at night to urinate
- Pain with urination
- Leaking urine while sleeping
Are there really treatment options?
Treatment options consistent of medical, procedural, or surgical approaches to treatment. Treatment will depend on the severity of incontinence symptoms and goals for treatment.
Medical treatment options include:
- Anticholinergic medications
- Lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, decreased fluid intake before bed, and bladder training
- Physical therapy (focus on kegel exercises and pelvic floor strengthening)
Procedural and surgical treatment options include:
