For some women reaching an orgasm may take longer than usual.

For others, orgasms may not be satisfying. And for others yet, reaching climax at all is difficult – even with proper stimulation. This can happen – it’s called “orgasm dysfunction”, also known as anorgasmia or female orgasmic disorder, and there’s something we can do about it.

What is Orgasm Dysfunction?

Orgasm dysfunction is characterized by the persistent or recurrent, distressing compromise of orgasm frequency, intensity, timing, or pleasure associated with sexual activity for a minimum of 6 months.

How many women does this impact?

Orgasm dysfunction is fairly common among women. It is estimated that 10-15% of women suffer from orgasm dysfunction.

What are the symptoms

The hallmark symptoms of orgasm dysfunction include the delay, absence, reduced satisfaction, or reduced frequency of orgasms.

Treatment Options

A combination of treatment options can be used to alleviate certain symptoms associated with orgasm dysfunction.

Treatment options include:

  • Hormone therapy
  • Prescription medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Counseling
  • CO2 laser therapy
  • Compounded medications
  • Using lubricants

What to expect on your visit

During your visit, you can expect your care team to listen to and address all of your concerns in a safe and trusted space. A consultation for orgasm dysfunction may include:

  • A history and physical examination
  • Labs
Is this occurring because I’m not attracted to my partner anymore?

Not necessarily, although having an open and honest conversation in the bedroom with your partner may help. Orgasm dysfunction, like female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD), can occur for a variety of reasons, including psychological, hormonal, anatomical, and medication-related causes.

I’ve never used a vibrator before. Will it help me?

Vibrators can help enhance sexual pleasure and can stimulate orgasm. In research studies, vibrator use has been shown to make it easier to achieve orgasm and increase the capacity for orgasms (yes, that means it is possible to have multiple orgasms with vibrator use). In a recent research study, researchers found that vibrators can also be good for your health, as they can improve pelvic floor muscle strength, improve incontinence, and facilitate treatment of vulvodynia. Vibrators can be used in combination with other resources, like Erotica stories in the Rosy app, and medications, to enhance sexual pleasure and desire.

My doctor at HerMD ordered an FSFI. What is this and what does it mean?

The Female Sexual Function Index, or the FSFI, is a self-report survey that is used to assess sexual function. Results from the FSFI will help your provider measure your sexual health.

Are there any FDA-approved treatment options for orgasm dysfunction?

Currently, in the United States, there are no FDA-approved options for orgasm dysfunction. However, there is no cause for alarm as there are many off-label treatments that have evidence to support helping with orgasm dysfunction. Some of these medications include Wellbutrin, Adderall, Oxytocin, and Addyii. Over-the-counter devices, serums, therapy, and certain procedures can also help women with orgasm dysfunction.
