If you’re navigating the stages of menopause, you aren’t alone. It is estimated that 75 million women are currently in one of the stages of menopause, with 6,000 more women expected to enter menopause each day. Given women will spend approximately 40% of their lives in postmenopause, the demand for specialized menopause care remains critical for individuals experiencing menopause symptoms and concerns.

That’s why we offer tailored menopause appointments, designed specifically to address your menopause concerns. Ready to live in your menopause “prime”?

We sat down with Melanie Zavala, MSN, WHNP-BC, MSCP, RN, HerMD Millburn Provider & Menopause Society Certified Practitioner, who provided guidance on what you can expect from a HerMD menopause appointment.

I’m starting to have irregular periods, and think I could be in perimenopause. Will all of my symptoms be addressed during a HerMD menopause appointment?

MZ: Your first menopause consultation at HerMD will always start with a detailed medical history. We will then address any bothersome symptoms you’re experiencing and where you may be in the menopause transition (perimenopause vs menopause). Our appointments are typically 40 minutes long, so we have ample time to go over all of your concerns and discuss what appropriate treatment options may be best for you.

What sets HerMD’s menopause care apart?

MZ: To start, our longer appointment times allow for providers and patients to forge a working partnership where together, an effective treatment plan can be crafted to fit the individual’s unique lifestyle. Additionally, as part of the menopause care paradigm, we will embrace a biopsychosocial approach to care, meaning we compile a multidisciplinary care plan to address the unique interplay between an individual’s biology, psychology, and social factors.

We also optimize the care of the individuals living in their menopause journey by offering supplemental health screenings, as menopause can increase the risk of several health conditions. Finally, when an individual is a candidate for hormone therapy, prior to initiating therapy, we will perform a thorough review of personal and family health history, severity of symptoms, prior use of hormone therapy, and calculations of specific risks for developing certain medical conditions. This approach ensures clinical outcomes are maximized and any potential risks are minimized.

Is there anything I should prepare for my menopause appointment?

MZ: The best way to prepare for your appointment is to have a sense of your last few menstrual periods and write down your symptoms that are most bothersome to you that you’d like to discuss. It is also best to be up to date on your annual exam (pap smear, mammogram, bone density if appropriate). For some patients, we will draw blood work the same day depending on your specific medical history.

Will I need to be seen again after my first menopause consultation?

MZ: Follow up is personalized to each patient. Some patients will come back in 2 weeks to discuss lab results, while other patients may come back in 2-3 months if starting a prescription medication.
