What is menopause?
Menopause is the start of the non-reproductive years and is defined by the absence of a menstrual cycle or any bleeding for 12 consecutive months. If you don’t bleed for 11 months, then have a period when you start the countdown again. The average age of menopause is 52.
Menopause can be natural or medically induced. Natural menopause occurs after a patient’s menstrual cycle has stopped for 12 months in the absence of other underlying causes. Medically-induced menopause occurs when the menstrual cycle stops due to surgical removal of the ovaries, effects of chemotherapy or radiation, or the use of certain medications.
So then, what is perimenopause?
Perimenopause occurs in the years before menopause – when your body begins to make the transition to menopause. People can start perimenopause at different ages. You may start to notice menstrual cycle irregularity and other menopause-like symptoms, such as hot flashes, issues with sleep, and vaginal dryness.
