What is menopause?

Menopause is the start of the non-reproductive years and is defined by the absence of a menstrual cycle or any bleeding for 12 consecutive months. If you don’t bleed for 11 months then have a period, you start the countdown again. The average age of menopause is 52.

So then, what is perimenopause?

Perimenopause occurs in the years prior to menopause – when your body begins to make the transition to menopause. Women can start perimenopause at different ages. You may start to notice menstrual cycle irregularity and other menopause-like symptoms, such as hot flashes, issues with sleep, and vaginal dryness.
