What is menopause?
Menopause is the start of the non-reproductive years and is defined by the absence of a menstrual cycle or any bleeding for 12 consecutive months. If you don’t bleed for 11 months, then have a period, and you start the countdown again. The average age of menopause is 52.
So then, what is perimenopause?
Perimenopause occurs in the years before menopause – when your body begins to make the transition to menopause. People can start perimenopause at different ages. You may start to notice menstrual cycle irregularity and other menopause-like symptoms, such as hot flashes, issues with sleep, and vaginal dryness.

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)
GSM is characterized by a variety of symptoms resulting from changes in hormone levels during menopause and can include vaginal dryness, burning, itching, painful sex, frequent urination, and more.
Peeing when you sneeze? Rushing to the bathroom because you might not make it? You may have incontinence, but guess what? Other women are experiencing it too and you don’t have to “just live with it.”
Vaginal dryness can lead to pain with sex. So if you are experiencing dryness, irritation, itching, burning, or pain with sex it is important to talk to your healthcare provider.
Forgetting why you went to the pantry? Having a hard time finding your words? You may be experiencing “brain fog.” Many women begin to notice increased forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating and thinking clearly during menopause.
HT includes medications that contain female hormones. HT is commonly used during menopause to alleviate the symptoms associated with changing hormone levels.
